Meals FAQ:
Who can receive meals? Meals can assist in times of illness, while recuperating from surgery, after hospitalization or other life challenges. If you are unable to prepare your own meal because of illness or motivation, you are recuperating from surgery or a stay in hospital, or you are disabled or elderly, Meals on Wheels is available to you.
How are meals paid for? Meals can be paid for in various ways. Clients may pay for their own meals and will be invoiced each month for the cost of the meals. Some clients may qualify for subsidies through the Long Term Care Program of Family and Community Services (658-2734), or, if you are a Veteran, you may be eligible under the program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (1-866-522-2122). The price of a single meal, either hot or frozen, is $6.00.
Can special diets be accommodated? Our hot meals are based on Canada’s Food Guide and prepared at several different kitchen facilities in the greater Saint John area. Each centre has its own food service manager and dietician. Arrangements can be made If you have diabetes, food allergies, require soft, minced or pureed meals, or need to restrict salt or fat.
What meal services are available? Meals-On-Wheels has two programs to choose from; hot meals, which are delivered at noontime, Monday to Friday, and frozen meals (minimum order of seven) which are delivered at a mutually convenient time.
Where do the
frozen meals come from? Our frozen meals are prepared by Private Recipe, a company based in Ontario, which has been preparing meals for home delivery since 1989. These meals are prepared under the supervision of a dietician, and can be easily heated in a conventional or microwave oven. Meals are available for various dietary restrictions, such as gluten-free, renal and pureed.
Things to Know:
Client Responsibility: The Client
must be home to receive their meal from our volunteers. Also, if a meal is not required on a specific day,
please notify the office before 9:15 am or earlier if possible. After this time, the change may not be able to be made, and the Client would end up being charged for the meal. Call and leave a message the day before if you are worried about forgetting. 658-1888.
